Pharping caves & monasteries, boating on Indra Sarobar, ancient Newari village life in Chitlang, and misty Tistung trails — Nepal's perfect weekend escape on two wheels.
Forget the tourist trail. The Kulekhani Weekend Ride takes you south of the capital into a landscape that most Kathmandu-based riders have never properly explored. A man-made reservoir set in forested hills, sacred caves used for meditation for centuries, and a traditional Newari village where time moves differently — all within two hours of Thamel.
On Day 1, you ride through the living Buddhist heritage of Pharping — home to Nepal's tallest statue of Guru Padmasambhava and natural meditation caves sacred to Tibetan lineages worldwide. Then the road drops to the Kulekhani valley, where lunch waits in Markhu and a boat ride on the glassy reservoir is your afternoon plan.
By evening you arrive in Chitlang — a traditional Newari village that feels a world away from the capital. Stone-paved lanes, pagoda temples, and an unhurried rhythm of rural life that Kathmandu lost a long time ago. Overnight in a local guesthouse, the stars close and unobscured by city light.
Day 2 winds through Tistung Village — a high-ridge settlement with sweeping valley panoramas — before the return to Kathmandu. This is the ride for anyone who wants to remember why they started riding: freedom, beauty, and the pleasure of arrival.
The road to Pharping leaves the valley behind quickly — terrace farms, forest ridges, and the first mountain panoramas opening before you reach Kulekhani.
A serene man-made lake set in forested hills. Boating on the glassy reservoir with terraced hillsides reflected in the water is a genuinely magical afternoon.
Nepal's tallest Padmasambhava statue and ancient meditation caves used by Buddhist masters for centuries. A living pilgrimage site that stops you in your tracks.
Stone lanes, traditional courtyards, pagoda-style temples, and genuine Newari hospitality. Your overnight base, and far more than just a backdrop.
A quiet lakeside village where lunch is simple and the views across the water to the forested ridges are anything but. The spot you wish you'd found years ago.
The Day 2 reward — a high-altitude village on a panoramic ridge with open views across the Makwanpur hills. A perfect final stop before the ride home.
Rated easy and available year-round. Perfect for first-time tourers, mixed-experience groups, or anyone wanting a genuine taste of Nepal's countryside without a week-long commitment.
One night in Chitlang — away from Kathmandu's noise and light pollution. The stars here are a reminder that the world is much bigger than any city.
Intimate group sizes, expert local guide, and a fully flexible pace. We ride to your rhythm, not a rigid clock or a tourist convoy schedule.
An 8 AM departure gives you the city before the traffic, riding south with crisp morning air. The first stop is Pharping — a site of extraordinary Buddhist significance. Here stands Nepal's tallest statue of Guru Padmasambhava, and carved into the hillside are natural caves where monks and lamas have been meditating for centuries. The stillness here is something you can feel — incense, butter lamps, and the sound of mantras in stone corridors.
From Pharping the road descends toward the reservoir. Markhu is the lakeside village for lunch — simple, generous food on the shore with the water glittering below. After lunch, boating on Indra Sarobar — the reservoir stretches between wooded ridges, and the quiet out on the water, with just the sound of oars and occasional birdsong, is a genuine tonic after city life. By late afternoon you're in Chitlang, a traditional Newari village with stone-paved streets and an unhurried pace. Overnight in a local guesthouse.
🛕 Monasteries · ⛵ Boating · 🏡 Newari Village NightWake up in Chitlang and take your breakfast before the morning mist burns off the valley. There's time to wander the village lanes — explore the main courtyard temple, watch local life start up, and let the contrast with Kathmandu settle fully. A short exploration of Chitlang's major sites — its traditional Newari architecture is best absorbed on foot before you saddle up.
The ride to Tistung climbs to a panoramic ridge village perched between valleys. At this altitude the views open dramatically — a sweep of forested Makwanpur hills with nothing between you and the horizon. Tistung is quiet and genuine, a community shaped by altitude and its position on an old trading route. Spend time here, then begin the return to Kathmandu — carrying the quiet satisfaction that only comes from two days entirely well spent.
