Eleven days into Nepal's last Tibetan kingdom — sealed from the world until 1992, untouched for centuries. Lo-Manthang awaits. This is not your typical Himalayan ride.
Upper Mustang was a demilitarised restricted zone until 1992 — and only opened to foreign visitors fifteen years after that. The result: a landscape, culture, and way of life that has barely changed in five hundred years. Mud-brick fortresses, cliff-carved monasteries, mani walls stretching for miles, and a capital city — Lo-Manthang — still ringed by its ancient white walls.
This is not a backdrop. This is a living, breathing Tibetan kingdom. And you're going in on a motorbike. This will push your riding skill and endurance to the very limit. If you've done Jomsom, this is the next chapter. If this is your first Nepal ride… we'll talk.
Our 11-day Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour covers the full circuit — from the Kali Gandaki Gorge into the restricted zone, all the way to the Kora La pass at 4,600m on the Chinese/Tibet border. You'll explore Chosar's 2,000-year-old cave dwellings, ride the lunar plateau north of Kagbeni, and sleep inside the walls of Lo-Manthang itself.
Every permit is handled. Every night's stay arranged. Your mechanic rides with you from day one. All you need to bring is the hunger to go further than most riders ever will.
Population under 3,000. No monsoon. No traffic. Ancient monasteries older than the printing press. Reached only on Day 4 of this route — and worth every kilometre.
The ancient whitewashed capital of the former Mustang kingdom. Still inhabited, still governed by the old king's lineage. You'll sleep within these walls.
Ride to the Chinese border at Kora La pass. Few adventure riders reach this point. The views into Tibet are completely otherworldly.
Ancient cave dwellings carved into vertical cliff faces, holding manuscripts and artefacts untouched for millennia. A UNESCO-level site you can actually ride to.
The world's deepest gorge by wall height. Ride its full length from south to north — a canyon that dwarfs everything in its path.
Miles of carved prayer stones stretching across the plateau. One of the longest mani walls in all of Nepal — and almost nobody sees it.
On the return leg, soak in thermal springs beside the Kali Gandaki. After 8 days of challenging off-road, you will have earned this completely.
Two 8,000m giants visible simultaneously for days. The scale is genuinely difficult to process until you're standing inside it.
Shamanistic rituals, Tiji festivals (May), ancient monasteries, local tsampa and butter tea. The cultural richness here is in a different league entirely.
Scale out of 10 · Guide & mechanic support included throughout · Off-road riding experience strongly recommended

🛬 Arrive · Team Briefing · Test RideEarly breakfast then we roll out of Kathmandu as the city wakes up. The Prithvi Highway through the mid-hills is one of Nepal's best all-day rides — river valleys, gorge sections, terraced hillsides. Arrive Pokhara by afternoon with the Annapurna range dominating the northern skyline. Tonight is for rest and anticipation.
🏍 First Roll · Valley LandscapesWe ride along the Kali Gandaki River through massive waterfalls and tropical gorge sections. Tarmac to Beni (~65km) then rough road begins — proper off-road through the Myagdi district. The Himalayan giants start emerging as you gain altitude: Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri. Reach Kalopani at the start of the gorge. Overnight guesthouse.
⛰️ Gorge Entry · Dirt Begins · Giants VisibleBreakfast then ride through the core of the Kali Gandaki Gorge following the river northward. Explore Kagbeni village — a medieval fortress town at the Upper Mustang checkpoint. Permits are checked and stamped here; beyond this gate is the restricted zone. Enter Upper Mustang and ride to Shamar. The landscape transforms completely: arid, red-rock, Tibetan plateau. You're in another world.
🔐 Permit Check · Restricted Zone EnteredThe iconic day. Rocky trails through Chhusang (2,950m), Chele, and Syanbochen — passing ancient cave dwellings carved into vertical rock faces. The plateau opens up and then you see it: Lo-Manthang, the ancient walled capital, rising white from the plateau floor. Check into a local lodge inside the walls. Walk the narrow lanes of the last Tibetan kingdom in Nepal. Nothing prepares you for this moment.
🏛 Lo-Manthang Reached · Forbidden Kingdom EnteredMorning: explore Lo-Manthang's ancient monasteries, the royal palace, and the labyrinthine alleys of this 15th-century walled city. Afternoon: push north to Kora La at 4,600m — the Chinese/Tibet border. Few riders make it this far. Stand at the edge of Nepal and look into Tibet. Return to Lo-Manthang for a second night inside the walls.
⛰️ Highest Point · Tibet Border · 4,600mEarly start to explore the Chosar caves — thousands of years old, carved into cliff faces, some still containing ancient manuscripts and painted murals. Then south via the Ghami mani wall — one of the longest in Nepal, stretching across the plateau. Panoramic views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. Reach Kagbeni by evening: a long day but one of the most culturally rich on the entire route.
🗿 Chosar Caves · Ancient Mani WallsMorning visit to Muktinath temple at 3,800m — sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, with its eternal natural gas flames and 108 waterspouts. Then a long descent through the gorge, passing Marpha's apple orchards and Tukuche village, to arrive at Tatopani and its famous natural hot springs. This is your recovery night — soak well, you've earned it.
🕌 Muktinath · 3,800m · ♨️ Hot SpringsA relaxed morning soak then ride back to Pokhara via Nepal's longest suspension bridge at Kusma — a dramatic crossing above a deep river gorge. Arrive Pokhara by early afternoon: free time to explore Lakeside, do laundry, buy souvenirs, or just sit by the lake and decompress from the altitude.
🌉 Kusma Bridge · Lakeside Arrival · Rest DayThe final ride. Prithvi Highway south-east back to Kathmandu — you'll experience it completely differently than Day 1. Back in Thamel by late afternoon. Evening: farewell dinner at a good restaurant with the entire crew — guide, mechanic, team. Stories, laughs, and a well-deserved celebration of what you just pulled off.
🏁 Final Ride · Farewell Dinner · StoriesFree time until your flight — last-minute shopping in Thamel, or just a slow morning coffee with the Himalayas on your mind. We'll drop you at Tribhuvan International Airport. Safe travels — and come back soon. The Everest circuit is waiting.

Your home country driving licence is accepted in Nepal, as is an International Driving Permit. Both are equally valid on this route. Ensure it's in date before you fly — border permit checks will verify it at Kagbeni checkpoint.
This route reaches 4,600m at Kora La. Altitude sickness is a real risk. Consult your doctor before booking, especially if you have cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. We build acclimatisation time into the itinerary. Send us a copy of your insurance before departure.
Bring your own complete gear: full-face helmet, motorcycle boots, gloves, and a riding suit with integrated or separate back and chest protectors. This is sustained off-road at high altitude — gear is not optional and we won't sugarcoat the consequences of cutting corners here.
Personal travel and medical insurance is non-negotiable for this route. Helicopter rescue from Upper Mustang costs thousands of dollars. Ensure your policy explicitly covers high-altitude adventure motorcycling above 4,000m.
Minimum 2 riders for best rates. The more riders in your group, the greater the per-person discount. Solo riders are assessed case by case. Backup transport is provided if groups exceed 5 riders. Contact us to discuss your specific group composition.
Natural events, extreme weather, road closures, political disruptions, or other conditions beyond our control may affect the tour. Additional costs from such events are borne by participants. Best months: March–June and September–November. Avoid July–August monsoon entirely.
Minor repairs are included: brake shoes, spark plugs, clutch plates, tubes, cables (one set), and engine oil. Damage from accidents, rough handling, or theft is the rider's responsibility. Our mechanic will handle everything on the road — but treat the machine well.
Spots are limited per departure. The Upper Mustang permit must be pre-arranged. Contact us now to lock in your dates for 2025 or 2026.
